HoloGEM

On 9-10 November, the second transnational project meeting of the participants of the EU international project HoloGEM (Holographic Integration for Geosciences Education and Mining), implemented under the  Erasmus+ programme under the supervision of the Foundation for the Development of the Education System, was held. The leader of the project is the AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow. Partners in the project are Kütahya Dumlupinar University (DPU) from Turkey, Universidade do Porto (UP) from Portugal, as  well as vocational schools implementing content in the field of broadly understood mining:  Valongo  Agrupamento de Escolas de Valongo (Portugalia), Nurettin Çarmıklı Madencilik Mesleki ve Teknik, Anadolu Lisesi (Balikesir – Turkey) and School Complex MCKK Lubin and ZST Rybnik (Poland).

The meeting took place in Turkey in the picturesque city of Kütahya, where Dumlupinar University is located. It is a very large university, where about 50,000 students currently study at many faculties on various subjects. The project meeting was attended by:

On behalf of AGH: Tomasz Niedoba, PhD, DSc, Associate Professor (project coordinator), Zbigniew Kuczera, PhD, Eng.

From the DPU website: Prof. Dr. Oktay Şahbaz., Dr. Onur Vehbi Demirciler

From the UP website: Prof. Dr João Santos Baptista, Joana Duarte

From Valongo’s website: Dr. Isabel Castro

From the school side of Balikesir: Dr. Ali Uslu

On behalf of ZST Rybnik: Headmaster Piotr Tokarz, MSc, Gabriela Smyczek-Nucleo, Małgorzata Kunka, Maria Szpil

A delegation from the MCKK Lubin School Complex could not take part in the meeting.

The HoloGEM project began in January 2023 and its main goal is to popularize mining-related fields of study both at the level of vocational schools and universities. During the first transnational project meeting in Wrocław, which took place in March, the main direction of research and the main tasks to be carried out in the current year were determined. As part of the project, the curriculum is to be modified, especially for introductory subjects, and for this purpose modern IT tools will be used, i.e. VR technology, e-books, e-learning platforms, innovative teaching techniques. As a result, potential students will be more interested in the subject of mining not only in the countries participating in the project, but also throughout Europe.

The meeting was opened by the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Prof. Cengiz Karagüzel. The leader of the meeting was Prof. Oktay Şahbaz. First, the results of the work carried out so far in individual centres were presented. These are mainly studies obtained using the Focus Groups interview method. This made it possible to identify the main shortcomings and challenges of the current system of teaching in mining faculties, indicated by both pupils, students and teachers. This provides a basis for specific actions aimed at the most sensitive points indicated in the reports. The result of the two-day meeting was to systematize the upcoming activities in the project and divide the scope of responsibilities between the partners. It was agreed that issues related to geology and mineralogy would be dealt with by the University of Silesia and the school from Valongo. Issues related to the mineral processing, underground mining, open-pit mining and occupational health and safety will be the subject of activities of the other partners in the project. Tools such as VR, AR, holograms, Web 2.0 tool, e-book will be used. In addition, tools will be created to advertise the effects of the project, i.e. videos. It was also proposed to create a project-based Google drive, use the STE(A)M methodology, or selected tools, i.e. Wooclap, Wordwall, Kahoot,  etc.). This task was entrusted to the ZST Rybnik school.

In addition to the meeting part, there was also an opportunity to get acquainted with the historical city of Kütahya, as well as the nearby modern city of Eskişehir. It is worth mentioning that during the gala dinner we were honoured by the presence of the Rector of DPU himself  – Prof. Dr. Süleyman Kızıltoprak, as well as the Ambassador Emeritus of Turkey to African countries – Prof. Dr. Ali Engin Oba and Rear Admiral of Turkish Military Doç. Dr.  Cihat Yayci. On the way back, we could also see the majestic and huge city of Istanbul with its beautiful monuments.

On 12 December, an online meeting will be held, the aim of which will be to further specify the activities in the project with a detailed division of tasks and dates of their implementation. The next transnational project meeting will take place on 8-9 July 2023 in Portugal (venue to be determined at a later date).
