DIM ESEE

The main idea of the Dubrovnik International ESEE Mining school project is to transfer international experience in the field of raw minerals to the participants of the DIM workshop. The emphasis is on the direct transfer of knowledge to the participants by renowned experts, but also on creating an open dialogue between the participants, students, scientists, entrepreneurs and the wider society. The knowledge and skills gained through the DIM ESEE programme are intended to increase the employability of mining engineers. In addition, broader general education on mining and mineral processing, particularly on improved mining techniques resulting in reduced environmental impact, contributes to wider public acceptance of mineral extraction and processing. In the long term, the programme will lead to a more sustainable development of mining and processing, resulting in national economic growth and employment opportunities.

Project objectives and framework

The European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) has awarded funding for the educational project “Dubrovnik International ESEE Mining school” under the KIC Raw Materials initiative. The Project consortium consists of eight key universities and scientific research units from the area of Eastern and South-Eastern Europe, among which the University of Zagreb, Faculty of Mining, Geology and Fuel Engineering, is the leader. The main objective of the project is to transfer knowledge and reinforce innovation in the areas of mining, recycling and waste management. It is a lifelong learning project, which will be implemented in close cooperation with the concerned industries in all countries of the project consortium. Over the four years of the project, the following issues are being addressed and analysed:

ENACT-SDG

EnAct-SDG is a two-year integrated RIS (Regional Innovation Scheme) project enhancing the skills of students in raw materials related disciplines in ESEE (East and South East Europe) countries towards the implementation and achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. The main tasks include the development of a dynamic, self-sustaining ecosystem and network between the academics, researchers, industry and professionals in the raw materials sector and the development of an action plan that will stimulate the implementation of objectives such as upgrading educational practices, the integration of the sustainability principles into the educational programmes of ESEE universities, strengthening the skills and competences of graduates and professionals in the raw materials sector. The project is implemented by eight EIT RawMaterials partners, including three project beneficiaries: National Technical University of Athens – NTUA (Greece, project coordinator), AGH University of Science and Technology – (Poland), Technical University of Kosice’s – TUKE (Slovakia), three knowledge transfer universities: Montanuniversität Leoben – MUL (Austria), Technische Universität Bergakademie Freiberg -TUBAF (Germany), Università degli Studi di Trento – UniTrento (Italy), research institute: Hub Innovazione Trentino – HIT (Italy) and industrial partner MYTILINEOS S.A. (Greece). In addition, the project is supported by two RIS industrial partners: the Polish Copper Employers’ Association (Poland) and the National Technology Platform for Research, Development and Innovation of Raw Material (Slovakia). The opening meeting of the EnAct-SDG project was held on 19.03.2020.

Project objectives and scope

The scope of the two-year integrated RIS project is to develop a sustainable network between ESEE and Universities, research institutes and industry to provide a pathway to ensure the integration of sustainability principles into the educational programmes of the beneficiary universities. To implement the project, universities from the ESEE region will collaborate through the EnAct- SDG network with other universities in the EU operating in the raw materials sector with high standards of innovation, with a Research Institute focusing on Innovation and Entrepreneurship and an industrial partner operating across the RM value chain. This project is in line with the strategic objectives of the ESEE RIS to transfer good practices and expertise on knowledge triangle integration (KTI) in terms of stakeholder engagement (KIC) and mobilisation, interconnection and internationalisation of national / regional networks, ultimately increasing the impact of the EIT RM community on the European level.

LIMBRA (Decreasing The Negative Outcomes Of Brain Drain In The Raw Material Sector)

Implementation within a consortium consisting of: University of Miskolc (leader), AGH-UST, Technical University of Kosice, Tecnalia Ventures, S.L., Sociedad Unipersonal, Fundación Tecnalia Research & Innovation, VŠB – Technical University of Ostrava.The main objective of this project is to strengthen entrepreneurship in the V4 countries in line with the recommendations of the “Green action plan for SMEs” (European Commission, 2014) in a way to meet the requirements of a circular economy (“Closing the loop – An EU action plan for the Circular Economy” – European Commission, 2015).

The task of this educational project is to develop multi-level solutions to reduce the so-called brain drain in the minerals sector, amongst others through SME development training and other events that increase the knowledge of graduate-engineers in entrepreneurship with a special focus on generations Y and Z special needs and changing demand for competences.The project received funding through the EIT Raw Materials KAVA 5 RIS competition. The team leader at FCERM is Marta Sukiennik, PhD.

MOBI-US (Structured Mobility Network Among Raw Materials-related Master’s Degree Programmes in Eastern and South-Eastern European Countries)

MOBI-US is a project funded by EIT RawMaterials. The intention of the MOBI-US project is to strengthen existing and create new networks of master’s degree programmes related to raw materials by creating curricula that take into account the mobility of students between ESEE partner universities. The established network of master programmes will enable students to complete one semester of study at a partner university. Studies at a partner university in a field of specialisation similar to the one studied at the home university will be possible through the so-called “mobility window”.

The target participants of the project are students of second degree or master studies, taking courses in ESEE countries. The project is mainly aimed at those who pursue their degree in areas related to the raw materials sector, including earth sciences, mining, processing and materials engineering. No special recruitment is required, as the mobility will be carried out between existing programmes.

The implementation of the project will be supported by universities that have more experience in setting up mobility programmes (Aalto University, Vienna University of Technology) as well as by industrial partners, research institutions (La Palma Research Centre – LPRC) and other specialists in the field.

REVIRIS (Revitalising Post-Mining Regions: Problems And Potential In RIS Europe)

The ReviRIS project aims at developing an assessment toolkit for decision makers in the field of post-mining areas revitalisation. It will analyse current practices in public participation and decision-making in the process of urban planning and revitalisation. An important feature of the project is the multi-level approach to the revitalisation, i.e. from the national, regional and local level based, among others, on an inventory of post-mining areas and their valorisation, but also a form of revitalisation management. The experience from various countries in this respect will provide a foundation for working out a model solution for Lower Silesia, and in particular for Zagłębie Miedziowe (the Copper Belt).

Project objectives and scope

The most important tasks of the project include

  • Structuring existing practices for the evaluation of post-mining areas and for land-use planning and regional development with a focus on revitalisation.
  • Definition of criteria for social acceptance of revitalisation projects.
  • Definition of indicators and criteria for evaluation of post-mining areas.
  • Development of a multi-level model for revitalisation management in RIS countries.
  • Development of a toolkit for regional planners.

RM@SCHOOLS-ESEE

RM@Schools-ESEE is a Wider Society Learning (WSL) project which aims to disseminate raw materials and mining-related professions to students, especially in the ESEE (East and South East Europe) region.
Dissemination activities are carried out through strategic European partnerships – academic units, schools and industry.
The project theme is the circular economy.
The basic process of this project is to make research and industry meet with schools, which in turn must meet with society, in a common learning environment. Through this process, the main objective of the project will be realised – to provide young people with the opportunity to increase their personal and collective endowment with the scientific and technological skills they need in everyday life as well as in their future careers.

SMARTHUB (Smart Courier Field Data Iot Radio Network & Big Data Analytics)

Implementation within a consortium consisting of indurad (leader) DE, AGH, DMT GmbH & Co., LTU Business AB, Sachtleben Bergbau GmbH & Co.KG, Südwestdeutsche Salzwerke AG, Mine Master Spółka z o.o., Tallinn University of Technology, talpasolutions GmbH, VKG Kaevandused OÜ. The main objective of the smartHUB project is to develop an IoT (Internet of Things) platform for sensor data management and visualisation for mining plants. The essence of the project is to combine various data sources, advanced sensor data analytics and dedicated applications in order to optimise the operation of mining companies with a special focus on their resources.

Project objectives and scope

The specific objectives of the project include the use of collected data in mining plants for:

  • Optimisation of traffic maintenance,
  • Improve operational effectiveness,
  • Support of work safety management.
    The project received funding from the EIT Raw Materials KAVA 5 Upscaling competition. The team leader at the AGH University of Life Sciences is Edyta Brzychczy, PhD, Professor of AGH.

TRAINESEEV.2

TrainESEEv.2 is a two-year project focused on designing products and services for a circular economy. The main objective of TrainESEEv.2 is to build a modern teaching methodology, improving all EIT educational activities on raw materials in the region. The areas of education and training for academic staff of RIS (Research Innovation Scheme) countries covered by the project include four training modules (acceleration programmes): teaching methodology, project preparation and management, innovation and entrepreneurship module and science for business module. The project is conducted by a consortium consisting of the following partners: AGH, Aalto University (Finland), Fundación Tecnalia Research Innovation, KGHM CUPRUM sp. z o.o. Research and Development Centre, Montan University Leoben (Austria), National Tecnical University of Athens (Greece), Technical University of Košice (Slovakia), Technical University Wien (Austria), University of Miskolc (Hungary), University of Zagreb (Croatia)-the project leader and two universities from ESEE region. The inaugural meeting of the TrainESEEv.2 project was held on 11-12.03.2020 in Zagreb.

Project objectives and scope

The project partners outlined the target groups of academic staff to maximise the impact of each of the four modules:

  • Teaching methodology will focus mainly on teachers lecturing subjects in English, content teachers from specific internationally attractive programmes and mobile active teachers.
  • Project development and management will focus mainly on young and middle-aged researchers.
  • The Innovation and Entrepreneurship module will focus on raw material lecturers.
  • Science to Business will focus on the academic initiators.

RaVeN

Project implementation period: 2022-09-01 – 2025-08-31

RaVeN (Raw Materials Value Chain) is a new, four-semester, EIT RawMaterials-funded master’s degree programme. The study is oriented towards designing products and services for a circular economy. The curriculum envisages supplying participants with expertise in sustainable extraction, processing of raw materials and its use in final products. The learning objectives are faced towards a holistic approach to resources and closing the gap between production and usage of raw materials. The indicated objectives will be ensured through an active learning path that fosters student engagement and the search for unconventional solutions that move towards circularity and sustainability. An innovative element of the programme is the maintenance of close contacts with industry representatives, providing non-academic insight into the formation of graduates and their entrepreneurial skills. Meeting the challenges of learning focused on transforming these skills into robust solutions to pressing societal challenges. In November 2022 the RaVeN program was awarded the EIT Label. The EIT Label is a quality mark that is awarded to the best masters and doctoral programmes that stand out in shaping a new generation of students.

A characteristic aspect of the RaVeN project is the implementation of international mobility, therefore each teaching semester will be carried out in a different academic centre. The first semester will be realised at the AGH University of Science and Technology, classes in the second semester will be held at TUKE University in Košice, the third semester will be conducted in Freiberg by TUBAF. The diploma semester, including the thesis, will be finalised at AGH University of Science and Technology in Cracow.  The programme will also include lectures and study tours within the framework of the summer school (Universidad Politecnica de Madrid, Spain), as well as a winter industrial trainings carried out by the Łukasiewicz Research Network -Institute of Non-Ferrous Metals.

The project consortium is composed of four university partners:

Project Objective and Scope

The essential aim of the RaVeN project is to provide a holistic approach to mineral resources through the vertical integration of processes along raw materials value chains. This provides education at each stage of the value chain: from exploration to the utilisation and recycling of products made from natural resources, emphasising value creation. In addition, the RaVeN program will promote the interactive education of students in the field of raw materials. The program will provide an education path based on innovation and close cooperation with the modern raw materials industry. Throught the RaVeN program we want to promote the best educational practices, as well as to build entrepreneurial skills.The RaVeN project will offer students interesting and motivating educational activities and practical exercises. Lectures and exercises will be conducted with guest speakers from industry and professionals from the raw materials sector. Students will be involved in scientific experiments. They will take part in field activities organised in innovative companies and will become the witnesses   of good practices dissemination. 

The innovative educational approach is based on active learning – “learning by doing”, i.e:  

  • meetings with stakeholders outside university – industry representatives, start-up creators, funding institutions, 
  • study tours, 
  • business coaching, 
  • development of entrepreneurial awareness,  
  • development of soft skills.

The RaVeN Master’s degree project is open to graduates of engineering studies, who have a good command of English language confirmed by an appropriate certificate.

HoloGEM (Holographic Integration for Geosciences Education and Mining)

HoloGEM is educational project being financed from Erasmus+ resources (KA220-VET-Cooperation in vocational education and training Erasmus+). Its main purpose is to modernize the educational offer in branch of Mining Engineering on the basis of newest digital solutions as well change of its perception by society.

The Hybrid curriculum will integrate the project’s outcomes to achieve a complete teaching and learning experience. Hence, supporting teachers, school leaders and other teaching professionals and addressing digital transformation through the development of digital readiness, flexibility, and capability. Moreover, HoloGEM aims to develop well-defined Toolkits offering teachers educational resources and guides for e-learning and class education.

Key elements

It is essential to reflect on the most appropriate communication strategies and prepare the necessary curriculum and tools for teachers and students while enriching the digital curriculum with interactive tools, interactive holographic models, eLearning techniques etc. thus, the results are:

  • A hybrid Digital Curriculum, following the partner school’s standards.

  • Toolkits, for eTwinning, School Education Gateway and EPALE Platforms
