International cooperation
International contacts are an important element in research and teaching activities. It allows not only closer research cooperation, but also interpersonal development of our students and staff. Every year, our community benefits from international exchanges – Erasmus, Ceepus, Smile and other programs. Despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, we are continuing the mission of internalizing the University and thus implementing the AGH strategy.
A series of working meetings, workshops and lectures focused on AGH’s international cooperation with university entities from around the world were held from April 17-21, 2023. Some of the foreign guests came to Poland within the framework of the Erasmus+ program, while others came specifically for the international conference organized by the Center for International Affairs entitled. “The Impact of Internationalization on the Openness and Tolerance of the University Environment”.
Lectures forms ideas
The Department of Civil Engineering and Resource Management is very active in the university’s international cooperation, coordinating exchanges between staff and students from Vietnam, China and Central and South America. Thus, we had the opportunity and honor to host academics from Hanoi University of Mining and Geology (HUMG, Vietnam), Universidad Technologica del Cibao Oriental (Dominican Republic), China University of Mining & Technology in Xuzhou (CUMT, China) and Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (Indonesia). It was an opportunity to exchange scientific experiences, learn about new cultures, but also to strengthen the activities of partner universities towards development in the raw materials field. The friendly atmosphere of the meetings translated into new plans for educational and scientific cooperation, as well as revisits. Many interesting discussions emerged from the guest lectures, including: The use of turbulence models to simulate the flow behind a tidal turbine, which was delivered by Professor Nguyen Van Tinh of HUMG. In turn, Professor Chang Hongfei of CUMT gave two lectures on steel structures and their innovative joining, and a third on the design of structures located in areas affected by mining operations, and the use of modular elements. In his three lectures, Professor Li Guichen, also from CUMT, presented the assumptions and goals of his ongoing research projects. The first on the design of escape excavations at increased water hazards, and the second related to the detailed analysis of collapse hazards in weak siltstone rocks – from the micro scale concerning the mechanism of water absorption at the molecular level, through the meso scale concerning the swelling and disintegration of siltstone rocks due to the action of water, to the macro scale and the effect of rock stratification around the excavation, the collapses taking place and the uplift of the bottom. Also, Professor Julio Espaillat of UTECO (Dominican Republic) gave an interesting lecture on the socio-economic situation of the country in the context of raw material exploitation, especially gold. In the course of two lectures organized by Professor Pavel Bogacz, Ms. Putu Dana Karningsih, PhD – Director of the Department of Industrial Engineering at the Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology, presented the approach used in science and industry in Indonesia to implement the concept of Lean Management, including based on LM tools used in manufacturing and services. The Scientific Circle of Management was in turn responsible for preparing a workshop conducted by Ms. Doctor for AGH students on finding and identifying waste and maximizing added value. The lecture was attended by students from both our Department and a guest group of foreign students participating in the Erasmus+ program.
FCE&RM international programme
The lectures provided an opportunity not only to learn about the range of teaching and research activities of other universities, but also to present WILZG’s offer of international engineering education, including the European project RaVeN. This is a program in Raw Materials for second-level students not only from Europe, but also from around the world, coordinated by Professor A. Kustra. The project was promoted to guests from, among others: China, Dominican Republic, Indonesia, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Albania, Malaysia. We believe that it will translate into internationalization of our Department and attracting new students from different parts of the world, which will also be an interesting cross-cultural touch for the whole WILZG community.
Cooperation
We would like to thank the coordinators of international cooperation for their efforts in taking care of the guests and internalizing our Faculty: Professor Barbara Tora, Dr. Krzysztof Broda, Professor Mark Borowski, Professor Piotr Malkowski, Professor Pawel Bogacz, Professor Arkadiusz Kustra, Dr. Marta Podobinska-Staniec, Dr. Sylwia Lorenc. We would also like to thank the service and support of Ms. Aleksandra Perkins-Oleszkowicz and Mr. Pawel Świerka.
